SAN JUAN ISLANDS

The San Juan Island Archapelago consists of a staggering 172 islands, some only visible during extreme low tide, and well over 300 miles of shoreline. The islands are famous for their resident pods of Orca Whales.

The three largest islands are geographically unique:

  • Orcas Island: Doe Bay, Moran State Park and all of Eastsound's art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and other visitor attractions.
  • Lopez Island: Forests with rolling farmlands, and quiet bays and driftwood-strewn beaches with distant views of mountain ranges and snow-tipped Mount Baker.
  • San Juan Island: Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, an alpaca ranch, a sweeping valley dotted with cows or sheep, the terraces of a lavender farm, vineyards with a tasting room in a historic schoolhouse, deep forest giving way to shining sea, a pod of orca whales and two lighthouses.

The shorelines are a combination of sandy, pebbly and rocky beaches, offering clumps of bull kelp, tangles of ceday, madrona and fir driftwood.
